our CAMPAIGN
LOCAL STREETS FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

We await full details from Merton Council, but have been informed that two options have been prepared, both of which observe the following principles:

  • Non-residents’ traffic will be banned from making selected turns in the Belvederes such that through-traffic will be prevented from using the main rat-running axes described at https://easthillsidetraffic.org/campaign-local-streets-for-local-people
  • Traffic restrictions will be during weekday rush hours only, proposal is 6:30-8:30 and 17:00-19:00.
  • Enforcement will be by using traffic cameras.
  • Residents traffic will be exempt – although the actual exemptions are to be decided.
  • Emergency and public service vehicles will also be exempt.
  • All properties will always be accessible to any traffic at any time, but non-residents’ traffic may have to take a specific route to avoid the cameras during weekday rush hours.
  • There are limited changes to parking arrangements. There may be some loss of parking at the impacted junctions as there may be a need to extend the double yellow lines further from the junctions concerned.

The two options being proposed are broadly similar, but option B is described as ‘belt and braces’ and so is based on the same principles as A, but is more extensive (with, of course, more signage etc.).

Our initial view is that these options make an excellent starting point for more detailed discussion, and we intend to participate fully in the consultation process.
